The word "Descant" is rich with history and musical significance, weaving together layers of harmony, lineage, and identity. For me, it is not just a name but a destiny intertwined with music itself. This article explores the musical meaning of 'descant,' its historical roots, and how my identity has been rooted in being a Descant.
The Musical Definition of Descant
In music, a descant refers to a melody or counter-melody that soars above the main theme, adding depth and contrast. Derived from the Latin "discantus," meaning "song apart," it creates a delicate, distinctive layer that complements and enhances the harmony. Imagine a choir singing a familiar tune: while most voices carry the main melody, one rises above, crafting a lighter line that stands out yet remains part of the whole. Similarly, in an orchestra, a single violin or flute might play a high, expressive part above the ensemble’s foundation, creating an ethereal quality.
Descants are most often sung by sopranos, whose high registers naturally suit their soaring lines, but they can also be performed by a soloist or small group for added variety. Instrumental descants are common as well, with bright, high-timbre instruments like the piccolo or flute taking on the role.
Historically, descants became prominent during the medieval and Renaissance periods, particularly in liturgical music. Composers would layer these intricate melodies over a plainsong chant, creating a heavenly interplay of sound. The concept resonates with the way we often seek to add our unique voices to the collective human experience.
A Lineage of Music
Music has always been central to my family. It’s not just something we did, it’s who we are. My father has been a prolific guitarist and songwriter, and the story of my musical journey begins the day I came home from the hospital. My father placed my tiny baby finger on middle C and said, 'C.' This became a daily ritual. He pressed my finger onto that note so often that it just stuck. Before I could even walk, I already knew middle C. Apparently, my second word after 'ma' wasn’t 'da', it was 'C.'
That same piano, my first love, became the cornerstone of my creativity. By age four, I had already written my first songs: "Wind in the Willows" in F Lydian and "Sword Fight" in A minor. Even though these songs were technically straight out of the key of C (all white notes), they were very melody-focused. Even now, forty years later, I still write in a similar way, crafting melodies that lead the music, always keeping a melody-first mentality.
A Lifetime of Dedication
Growing up, music was not just a skill to be honed; it was my identity. At twelve, I graduated from the Springfield Conservatory. My teenage years were spent in rigorous study under a professor from Berklee that I was taking private lessons from, dissecting every nuance of music theory and composition during lessons that stretched hours beyond their scheduled time. It was during this period that I discovered Chopin, whose works became a lifelong inspiration.
High school marked a pivotal era. Music became the language through which I expressed my individuality. While peers wrestled with questions of who they were, I simply was a musician. Songwriting became my voice, and performance my outlet. By the time I reached college at HCC and Westfield State, my trajectory was set. I had no doubts about my path; to be a Descant was to be immersed in music.
The Realities of a Musical Life
Being a musician is far from glamorous. It requires relentless dedication, creativity, and perseverance. It’s a road filled with challenges, financial, emotional, and artistic, but the rewards are profound. Music has the power to heal, inspire, and connect. It reminds us of the beauty in persistence and the importance of following our passions, no matter how uncertain things may seem.
My journey included years of grinding as a touring musician, performing nearly a thousand shows in countless venues and honing my skills through every experience. Alongside performing, I taught at several music schools, starting at just 18 years old. Each teaching role deepened my understanding of what it meant to be both a musician and an educator. These experiences shaped my approach, allowing me to connect with students on every level, answering their questions and guiding them with a wealth of practical and theoretical knowledge.
In 2018, I combined these experiences to open Descant Music and Art Studio. Launching my own school wasn’t just about sharing my expertise; it was about creating a space where aspiring musicians could thrive. Over the years, I learned the ins and outs of both teaching and business, building a school that now boasts a team of seven talented teachers. Together, we focus on giving the next generation of musicians the foundation they need to reach their fullest potential.
Our mission at Descant Music is to nurture creativity, foster discipline, and inspire confidence. Whether a student’s dream is to play for personal enjoyment or perform on the world’s biggest stages, we strive to provide them with the tools, knowledge, and encouragement to succeed.
